Promoting Excellence in the Baking Industry

Bake Skills Australia is a National Competition dedicated to promoting quality, training, and professionalism in the baking industry. The competition has been a cornerstone of the baking industry for over 30 years, fostering a platform where young talent can thrive and showcase their skills.

The primary aim of Bake Skills Australia is to foster excellence in baking by providing a structured environment for young apprentices and newly qualified pastry chefs and bakers to compete. The program emphasises the importance of high standards, innovative techniques, and professional development within the industry.

Bake Skills Australia hosts annual state competitions with participants competing in either Bread or pastry category, demonstrating their proficiency and creativity.

Winners of the state level competitions advance to the National Bake Skills Championship Final, which serves as the pinnacle of the program. This highly anticipated event will be held at the 2026 Fine Food Australia Expo in Melbourne, showcasing the best of young baking talent in Australia.

The competition is supported by various industry sponsors and partners, reflecting the collaborative effort to maintain and elevate the standards of the baking profession. This support ensures the continuity and growth of the Bake Skills program, benefiting participants and the baking industry.

How it works

  • From the entry applications, the steering committee will select the finalists. This process may involve a bake off for a state or region depending, on the number of applicants received

  • The winners of the bake off will be invited to take up one of the finalist positions available for pastry chef or baker at the Bake Skills National Championship Finals

  • Finalists will compete at the Bake Skills National finals, held live at the Fine Food Expo in Sydney 31st August - 3rd September 2026.

Competition Details

The Competition Production Schedules are likely to include products from the following areas.

Pastry Chefs

  • Puff and/or Choux pastry products.

  • Decorated special occasion cakes

  • Chocolate entremets

  • Gourmet pies

  • Specialty pastry

  • Baked cheesecakes

Bakers

  • Sourdoughs

  • Plaited loaves

  • Croissants

  • Baguettes

  • Bread models

  • Pretzels

  • Pastry Chefs will compete on 31st August and 1st September with a preparation day on 30 August. Accommodation will be provided for three nights, together with airfares where applicable.

  • Full competition production schedules will be sent to you once entries close.
